PARENT PARTICIPATION
United Track Club is an all-volunteer organization. To insure that few do not have to do the work of many, parent participation is required. The success and quality of the athletes’ experience depends heavily on parent participation.
Experience and/or knowledge of Track & Field are not needed in most of the volunteer positions. You do not have to run with the athletes to be a coach.
Parents are asked to try to be available when called upon to help, particularly at home meets. Also, any parental help at practices is appreciated. Talk to the age group head coach if you want to help at practice. Following is a description of the various volunteer positions:
COACHING
The United coaching staff is made-up of our Head Coach, Age Group Coaches, Assistant Age Group Coaches and Specialty Coaches. Our goal is a 20 to 1 athlete to coach ratio. Parents are encouraged to assist coaches at practices. Please see the COACHES web page for more information on coaching positions and duties.
TRACK MEET SUPPORT
Staging a track meet is an enormous undertaking requiring the time and effort of many people. We have enjoyed a reputation for hosting some of the most smoothly run track meets within our Conference as a result of enthusiastic parental help. You might be asked to assist for a short time at a track meet. You’ll find it fun to be on the field and involved!
HOME MEETS
The following are descriptions of the volunteer positions that are needed for each of our three home meets. In order that one volunteer is not stuck in one area all meet, we require numerous parents who can assist while their child is participating in that event or waiting for their next event. Most positions are easily taught before the event takes place.
Meet Director: Organizes Group Parents, runs the meet and handles all disputes or questions about official results along with the Head Coach. The Meet Director is a member of the board.
Set-up: All coaches, board members and as many volunteers as possible to set-up tents, staging, timers, equipment & field events.
Starter: Official who starts majority of races with a starter’s/blank gun. Visiting teams will provide starter for Gremlin & Bantam sprints. Because this position takes training, we have one person per season.
Announcer: Uses PA system to make announcements and calls for events and volunteers. Knowledge of Track & Field is helpful.
Head Timer: Responsible for timer, operation of timer and subsequent results. Because this position takes training, we have one timer per season.
Staging: Organizes the athletes for upcoming race(s) - lane assignment. This position takes four people for assistance and breaks.
Tag Pullers: Pull the athlete’s tag from one lane after runners have crossed the finish line. Eight or nine lanes may be used at one time. Each age group will provide 8 parents to work this area while their children compete - approximately 24 volunteers throughout the meet.
Long Jump: Line-up athletes, record, mark and rake. All field events have instructions, record sheets & equipment. Each age group will provide 3-4 parents to run event while their children compete - approximately 12 volunteers per pit throughout the meet. Visiting teams will run one of these pits.
High Jump or Shot Put: Run and record each event. Scorers must have previous experience in this event - usually run by Specialty Coaches. Each age group will provide 2 parents to assist at each pit - approximately 6 volunteers per pit throughout the meet. Visiting teams will run one of these pits.
Awards: If applicable, organize and present ribbons or medals (2 volunteers needed).
Relay Zone Judges: Judge fouls for 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay races. 4 parents needed.
Merchandise: Sell sweat shirts and t-shirts.
Data Input: Computer Specialist enters, records and forwards meet results. Volunteers will assist him or her with data entry of incoming race and field events - 2 persons needed for relief.

AWAY MEETS
Although we host three home meets, we will be responsible for the following areas at the away meets - Long Jump; High Jump or Shot Put; Starter; Head Timer; Tag Pullers; and Data Input (If needed)
